I am getting out of the tanning bed business. I've only had the salon since 2012 and all the beds were brand new when I opened it up. I just want a career change. I want EVERYTHING gone. I have 8 beds and they were all manufactured in December 2011. They are Wolff beds. Very nice beds. Includes 7 lay downs and 1 stand up. All the furniture was brand new in 2012 as well. Pack it up and move to your location within days. This is the best opportunity for someone that wants to open a salon or just have a new location. Tantracks software is included with all the tmax manager system. Priced for quick sale! The beds USED are worth about $25k. No bulbs have over 500 hours on them. You will also get a little over $1500 in retail worth of lotions. First $22k CASH gets EVERYTHING. PM me if you are interested in learning more about the beds. I am located in GA.

New to the business and the forum!

Hey,

Newbie to the forums here. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to make an account. I've been in the spa business for about 6 years, and am looking to expand into tanning.

Has anyone done this before, if so do you have any advice for me? It seems like a no-brainer to me. I have never understood why there aren't many spas that try to draw business from both markets.

Any advice, or experience you have to share would be greatly appreciated!

This article by Dr. Keith Ablow titled "Don't blame tanning beds for anything" is a "good start" but he didn't go far enough. He could have also said that the data used to show a link between tanning beds and CMM has been "manufactured" and is on the same par for validity as the global warming scam.

However, he does effectively show that the "tanning causes dependence" scam is, well, a scam.

Many Beds for Sale!

Jut did an acquisition of a Hollywood Tan and a move of one of our salons. So here is what I have: (PRICE ARE LISTED - ALL OFFERS WILL BE CONSIDERED!)

4 HT Mystics, which are basically MyMysts enclosed in their stainless steel shell.

3 HT 60's - big standup units, 60 lamps, 8 min times (might be 9) - $3000 each
3 HT 54's - longer session, 54 lamps - $2500 each
4 HT 42's - it's their base unit with 42 lamps - $1500 each
2 HT High Pressure standups - same shells, bunch of HP lamps - $4000 each
1 HT 4 star 'Hybrid' booth. This was made for HT by Heartland. Facial lamps + bunch of body bulbs. - $4000 each

Basically you have enough standups to open your own HT or a stand-up concept.

Here is what we have from our salon we've moved and upgraded:

1 2002 Magic 636 with Mug6 - $8000
2 2002 Sunsport Platinum HP mattress beds - $3000
1 Orbit Onyx - year is probably about 2004 but have to check - $1500
1 Ultrabronz 950 HP bed, great condition, beautiful bed - $5000
1 2001 Matrix L33, lots of hours, lots of use - still works very well - $1500

All extra units are in our big storage facility outside of Atlanta. It's like a used tanning bed buffet. So if you have an interest in any of these beds, just let me know and we can negotiate prices and such. Not looking to make a killing, so make a reasonable offer and the bed is yours!

Sunvision Pro 28lxt Won't turn on

$

I recently bought 2 used Sunvision Pro 28lxt's. I was told both worked fine, but once I put them together I can't get them to turn on. When I flip the switch to turn them on, nothing happens. I opened up the top and checked to see if everything was getting power with a voltage meter, and when I touched the capacitor the fans turned on but no bulbs were initiated. Both beds have the same issue, so I am assuming it is something small...

I am wondering if these beds were previously hooked up to a TMaxx if it would effect the beds orginal power switch? If so, how do I change it back? If anyone has any input please send it my way. Thanks!

Critique my business model..

Looking at opening a sunless tanning salon, with a primarily subscription-based business model.

Location: campus of a large university on the west coast; it's swimsuit season year round. 55k students nearby, and I'd be located in a shopping/nightlife district that has around 4 million visitors annually.

Competition nearby: one person airbrush salon and one mega chain that is very poorly run

Expenses: $1k/mo rent & overhead. I'd work there for "free" at first until I had enough clients to spend $4k/mo on an employee.

Equipment: 1 airbrush sunless, 2 mystic units.

Model: $32/mo subscription for weekly Mystics. $45/mo for weekly airbrush. Walk-up $15 Mystic, $25 airbrush. May tweak this upwards to make the subscription seem like a better deal.
I'd aim to get as many subscriptions as I can and add on mystic booths as needed if I can book them.

At this model, about 140 ongoing "subscriptions" is my break-even point (with an employee), which is about 1.6 tans per hour in a typical day. Walk-ins and additional subs would be profit.

Does that sound like a reachable goal? What am I not thinking about?

Thanks!

Solution won't spray?

I've been airbrush tanning since September of last year and only now am I coming across this problem. I'm using a MaxiMist XL Helia 2.0 with Moroccan Mineral Mist solution and my gun does not want to pull up the solution. I tried to tan a client this afternoon and had to reschedule the appointment because no solution was coming out of the gun. If it did come out, it came out in one big burst and then nothing. I used water in the cup as a test and the water sprayed out wonderfully but as soon as I try the solution again, nothing. I just took apart my gun and cleaned it thoroughly before I saw my client so I know it isn't dirty. The Moroccan Mineral Mist is quite thick... can my gun just not handle the viscosity? I recently had an issue with speckles and I wonder if this has something to do with it. I love the results I'm getting otherwise and really don't want to switch solutions.

Any advice? Thanks :)

Color to color comparison between solutions

$

I have been using Norvell regular solution and occasionally the dark solution for several years. I have fair skin with freckles but want to be as dark as possible without the uneven fade (crocodile skin) that can happen when fair skinned people use darker formula. Mostly I have had success as my technician is very good. I recently tried the new Norvelle Venetian formula and LOVE it. My tech told me she was able to get it pretty dark with a lot less solution than I normally require for the same darkness using the regular formula! (she normally does 2 pretty heavy coats of regular using about 6oz of color- but only used about 4 of the venetian). Although at first (while developing) the venetian looked like it was going to be way too dark, when I showered the next morning (13 hours after application) it was perfect!! Golden with brown undertones rather than the yellow-orange I sometimes get with the regular color.

Here is my question- Although I love the Venetian, I am curious about other product lines and how they compare. I am thinking of trying KahunaBay and Sjolie but don't have any idea which color I should choose to get a comparable tan (color) to the one I get with Norvell Venetian.

Does anyone know how the products cross compare? For example would I go with regular or dark Kahuna Bay solution? I can purchase the sample pack that provides 4 different types of solution (melange, artesian, etc), but don't know which color to choose.

And Sjolie? Should I get 6, 9 or 12?

Because I like to be pretty dark, I am thinking of selecting the dark Kahuna Bay solution, but maybe 9 is best with Sjolie? Any thoughts? Suggestions? I appreciate and look forward to your answers!
